Top Tips for Choosing Home Insurance

Published

on

There are so many home insurance providers out there that it can feel like an impossible task trying to choose the right deal. But whether you own your own home or rent, it’s one of those household essentials that you need to organise.

Buildings insurance covers bricks and mortar and will deal with any costs in the case of damage. “You can get away with just choosing this level of cover, which will protect you from serious incidents like fire and flooding, but most people choose to cover their personal possessions and home contents too” says Marylebone estate agent, Kubie Gold.

Before you make your decision, take a look at our top tips:

  • Make sure you know what’s covered. Sounds obvious, but you might be surprised to learn how many people just go for what looks like the lowest monthly payment amount without checking the small print. In a recent survey, 14% of people said they didn’t know that their home contents insurance covered their possessions when traveling overseas. Every policy is different so don’t be fooled into thinking that this will be the same with yours- the important thing is to read the small print and ask the right questions before signing any paperwork.
  • Don’t necessarily stick with the policy your mortgage broker tries to sell you. Your broker will probably be on commission so it’s in their best interest to sell you the policy their employers want them to, but that doesn’t mean you have to take it. “Spend some time shopping around and doing your own research before being bullied into something that isn’t 100% right for you” advises Lawsons & Daughters Fulham estate agent.
  • Collect all the essential information first- it’s important that you get accurate estimates for how much it would cost to rebuild your home and replace your contents before taking out a policy. Guesswork might seem like the easier option, but taking the time to sit down and really work out the facts about what you need to be covered will save you from costly mistakes should the worst happen.
  • Watch out for annual increases. You might be tempted by a great deal now, but if you’re not careful (this comes down to reading the smallprint again!) you could find yourself with a huge price hike in a few months. Special offers are great for a while, but it’s false economy if you’ll end up paying more further along the line.
  • Think outside the box. You’ve probably thought about all the obvious home contents and possessions like TVs, mobile phones, washing machines etc but there are lots of other things that can be covered by home insurance. Freezer contents, garden plants and features and clothes can all be included, and don’t be afraid to ask if anything is unclear.

The final word from Robert Holmes: “Home insurance is something you can’t afford to take a risk with. You may well end up paying a monthly fee and never use it, but if anything ever does go wrong and you’re not covered you’ll potentially cost yourself thousands- and your home.”

India, being one of the fastest growing economies in the world, is witnessing a digital revolution. PM Narendra Modi has trotted out numerous programs to promote Digital India, ensuring digital inclusion across the country. On this note, Amit Bhatnagar Diamond Power MD, has digitally-empowered his company, in the field of manufacturing power transmission equipment.

Diamond Power Infrastructure Ltd, also known as Dicabs, was the first Indian company to manufacture alloy conductors and proto-test HSHC (High Strength and High Conductivity) conductors. Today, Dicabs is the only company in India, which holds a BIS mark certification for alloy conductors.  It also complies with the ISI quality standards for manufacturing all types of conductors.

The Vadodara- based company has also established India’s headmost ‘continual horizontal lead extrusion facility’, along with the ‘aluminum corrugation facility’ for cables (66KV). Dicabs is also ranked at the fifth position in the world, for manufacturing extra high-voltage cables up to 550 KV.

The homegrown companies are getting new opportunities to grow, as the Centre has reduced imports in the segment. India is on a transformational spree, and will become a hub for technology and innovations in the coming years. The initiative has already received pledges from Diamond Power Infrastructure Ltd and other corporate ventures, with investments worth Rs 4.5 lakh crore. This figure is expected to surge as the ‘Make in India’ campaign gains momentum.
