Sharon Williams, chief of schools for the East Baton Rouge Parish school district, is leaving for a job in the Chicago area after roughly a year in the district’s No. 2 job.
The Proviso Township High Schools District hired her as deputy superintendent. It’s a much smaller district based in Forest Park, Illinois, with about 4,000 students in three high schools.
Alex Stubbs, a spokesperson for the Baton Rouge district, said it is “an amicable parting,” and the district will miss her.
“I don’t think personally or professionally we could match what they had to offer her,” Stubbs said.  
Arcelius Brickhouse will serve as interim chief of schools, according to a press release from the district. He is executive director of the Southeast Region of Schools in Baton Rouge and has 20 years of educational experience as a speech pathologist, elementary teacher, assistant principal and principal, among other jobs. 
Stubbs said Brickhouse will shadow Williams during her remaining time in Baton Rouge. While Narcisse is not sure when he will make a call on having someone fill that position, Stubbs said Brickhouse and Williams share the same views on how to move the district forward.
Before coming to Baton Rouge, Brickhouse was an education consultant and before that executive director of secondary education for Plainfield County Public Schools in Plainfield, New Jersey. Over the past decade he’s held administrative jobs in six districts in four states. His longest stint was 15 years in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where Narcisse worked as well a few years later.
Narcisse issued a statement praising Williams.
“I have known Dr. Williams for many years, and she remains one of the strongest leaders and visionaries I have ever worked with,” he said. “I believe that the children of East Baton Rouge Parish are better positioned on their pathways to success, thanks to the hard work and dedication of Dr. Williams, and we thank her for the time and dedication she has shown the students and staff of East Baton Rouge Parish.”
Williams, a native of Nashville, was one of Narcisse’s first hires. Before coming to Baton Rouge, she served as chief academic officer for public schools in Holmes County, located in north central Mississippi. It’s an academically struggling rural district of about 3,000 students, most of them living below the poverty line.
Williams has worked in five states, including several years as a project director with the Center for Educational Leadership, or CEL, at the University of Washington. As a CEL consultant, she worked with Narcisse while he was with Nashville public schools, helping that district with principal supervision and support work. She has a doctorate in education from Tennessee State University in Nashville.
