Danielle Green elected president of Flint Board of Education
FLINT, MI — Danielle Green, a sixth-year member of the Flint school board and former vice president, was elected as the new president of the Flint Board of Education at the district’s organizational meeting Wednesday.
Green, who is serving a term that ends at the end of this year, will have served in each of the Flint Community School district’s school board positions over the course of her six years.
The newly-elected president was supported by a vote of 4-3. The four votes included Green, Joyce Ellis-McNeal, Adrian Walker and Laura MacIntyre.
Board members Chris Del Morone, Allen Gilbert and Carol McIntosh voted for McIntosh to remain as school board president.
Green said after the meeting that she wants to be an inclusive leader that makes decisions alongside the rest of the school board.
She will begin her presidency by making committee assignments and setting their meeting dates, listening to the priorities of other board members and focusing on COVID-19 safety for students, Green said.
“I am just one vote. Even though I am president, the most important position that I hold is board member,” she said. “… I am a collaborative leader. I won’t be making any decisions on my own — we will do it together.”
The district is currently doing virtual learning as COVID-19 cases in Genesee County continue to spread at an alarming rate. Green said she is in full support of the decision to go virtual.
Green takes over for McIntosh, who served in the board president role for one year.
McIntosh received a standing ovation from other members of the board for leading the district through the pandemic.
“It was an honor serving you all. I am sure Ms. Green will do an amazing job and I am in full support of all of our officers no matter where I sit. My fight will always be for our students,” McIntosh told the board.
For the other officer positions, Joyce Ellis-McNeal was voted as vice president. Adrian Walker was voted as secretary and Laura MacIntyre was voted as treasurer.
Chris Del Morone was voted as assistant secretary/treasurer, along with the board’s liaison to the Genesee County Association of School Board Members Executive Committee.
Green started her own nonprofit in 2010 and has authored four books since 2011.
