Drake University to start online as omicron cases climb, while other Iowa universities plan for in-person – Des Moines Register
Drake University students will start the first two weeks of their spring semester remotely because of possible classroom disruptions from climbing COVID-19 cases.
Meanwhile, Iowa’s three public universities so far have committed to in-person learning.
Drake’s first scheduled day of the semester for most students is Jan. 24, and university spokesperson Ashton Hockman said Tuesday the plan is for in-person classes to resume as normal after the first two weeks.
Provost Sue Mattison told the campus that the two-week pause on in-person learning is because of the anticipated peak of coronavirus transmission in the Des Moines area and the state.
“Based on current scientific evidence, cases are expected to peak in Iowa during the last week of January (and) first week of February,” Mattison said. “This means the likelihood of extreme disruption to the classroom experience due to students in isolation and quarantine is very high.”
As of Jan. 7, the university reported six students who had tested positive were in isolation on campus, another 23 students who had tested positive were off-campus and 33 students were in quarantine.
On Monday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported about 15,000 new positive tests since its last update on Friday. The statewide 14-day positivity rate was 20%, or about one in five tests coming back positive.

“Students are strongly encouraged to administer a COVID-19 test at home prior to returning to campus,” Mattison said. “This could alleviate having to move to and from campus multiple times, and most importantly, exposing others.”
Drake’s residence halls will open as scheduled on Jan. 22 but students won’t be required to return to campus housing at the time, though they will be allowed to.
Many student activities and events in the first two weeks will be postponed or held virtually, but not athletics, Mattison said. And managers “should consider allowing staff to work remotely during this time where practicable,” based on departments’ needs.
Law students’ classes begin on Jan. 18 and will be remote.
University of Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa remain committed to in-person start to 2022
All three of the state’s public universities — the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa — plan to resume in-person learning as scheduled.
As with Drake, Iowa’s associate vice president and dean of students Angie Reams acknowledged in an announcement Monday that cases on campus and in the surrounding county are spiking.
Reams suggested that students request a free COVID-19 test for pick-up or mail delivery through Test Iowa before the start of the semester.
Iowa State also has testing options available through its student health center — for symptomatic students — Test Iowa kits for employees, and students at locations on campus and through a Hy-Vee drive-thru clinic for members of the university and Ames communities.
All three institutions are encouraging vaccination and the wearing of face masks to combat the disease, among other measures. However, state law forbids the universities from requiring that students get vaccinated against COVID-19. Nor can they require face masks under a regent policy.
Masks are required indoors on Drake’s campus.
