Under Her Eye
With Sex Education season 3 coming to Netflix in just over a month, these new images are everything.
If you’ve been patiently waiting for Sex Education season three to make its way to Netflix, you don’t have long to wait. With just over a month until the show returns to our screens on 17 September, Netflix has released a whole load of new images to keep us preoccupied and we can’t wait.
Today, the streaming platform released a series of first-look images from the upcoming season – and it’s clear that a lot has changed at Moordale.
Adam and Eric look absolutely smitten with one another, Isaac is back on the scene, and what’s that? Otis has grown a moustache? We can already hear Maeve’s sarcasm.
As the series’ log line description reads: “It’s a new year, Otis is having casual sex, Eric and Adam are official, and Jean has a baby on the way. Meanwhile, new headteacher Hope (played by Jemma Kirke) tries to return Moordale to a pillar of excellence, Aimee discovers feminism, Jackson gets a crush and a lost voicemail still looms.
“Prepare for commitment animals, alien phenomena, vulva cupcakes and much more of Madam Groff.”
To say we’re excited to learn more about what season three has in store would be a massive understatement.
Keep reading to check out everything we know about the new season so far.
Alongside Asa Butterfield, we know all of the series’ main characters will be returning for season three thanks to Netflix’s announcement video.
These, of course, include Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey and Aimee Lou Wood.
On top of the main cast, however, there will also be some new cast members joining the season three line-up.
These include Girls star Jemima Kirke (who will be playing Moordale’s new headmistress Hope), alongside Dua Saleh as a new student called Cal and Jason Isaacs as Peter Groff, Mr Groff’s more successful older brother.
If the other seasons are anything to go by, it’s probably easier to ask “what won’t they be about?”
The show’s creator Laurie Nunn is great at exploring a range of important storylines and situations all at once, so we have no doubt that the plot for season three will be just as good as the other two.
Of course, the big storyline that will continue to lie at the show’s centre in season three will be Otis and Maeve’s relationship. After Otis and Ola called it a day and he sent a voice message to Maeve confessing his love for her, we were sure the two would finally get together.
But Isaac, Maeve’s neighbour who happens to have a crush on her, got in the middle of that happily-ever-after moment when he deleted Otis’ message, leaving Maeve none the wiser.
And that’s not forgetting all the plot details hinted at in the series’ official log line description, which we already discussed above.
Although, as we’ve already mentioned, we don’t know much about season three when it comes to specific plot details, the cast have revealed some key details about the upcoming instalment.
Speaking during a conversation with fellow cast member Aimee Lou Wood on Bafta’s Instagram page ahead of this year’s TV awards, Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric Effiong on the show, explained how the coronavirus pandemic had led to fewer ensemble scenes and more “individual” moments.
“We were so out of sequence,” Gatwa explained. “I’m very much looking forward to seeing [it]… I’ve only read everyone else’s storylines. For me, that’s always the most exciting part of a production, is when you can look at the end product and look at everyone else’s storylines.”
And in a later interview, again in a press appearance for the Bafta Television Awards, where he is nominated for Best Male Comedy Performance, Gatwa said that season three sees Eric return “back to his culture a lot more”.
“I think those scenes were very special,” he said. “Just kind of having a set where the majority of people were Black was really great and really powerful and represented Eric’s culture and his family. Those are always very quite profound moments.”
Gatwa isn’t the only cast member to speak about what to expect from season three. In an interview with The Guardian published at the beginning of this year, Asa Butterfield – who plays Otis Milburn on the show – revealed that his character has undergone some changes between seasons two and three.
“There’s a bit of a time-jump since the season two cliff-hanger,” he explained. “Otis is back at school but he’s got different things on his plate. He’s grown up a bit and become slightly more sassy.”
He added: “It’s been fun to portray his newfound charisma. Don’t worry, though, he’s still tragically awkward too.”
Butterfield also revealed his character would sport a moustache after the time-jump but was quick to add that it “doesn’t last the whole season”.
“I don’t think anyone could bear looking at that thing for long,” he joked.
Finally, outside of the various character-related moments we can expect to see unfold in season three, it’s also been revealed that the season will have a pretty big ending.
Speaking in an interview with Metro, the series costume designer Rosa Dias revealed that the ending is “massive” – and that the show’s writers will have their work cut out for them if they continue the show into season four.
“When you see series three, the end of it is really quite interesting,” Dias explained.
“Whatever happens in four, if it happens, wow – the writers have got a challenge. They’ve got a massive challenge on their hands.”
She continued: “It will be really interesting to see if they do do four, what they’re going to do. It’s massive.”
All eight episodes of Sex Education season three will be released on Netflix on Friday 17 September, so make sure to add the date to your diary.
We’ll update this space with the latest news as and when we get it, so stay tuned for any more information.
