Plastic Packaging Duty: How your business may prepare

The UK government is keen for corporations and people to use recycled materials wherever possible. Annually the UK provides significantly more than two million full tons of plastic packaging waste. That equates to about 36 kilograms of plastic packaging waste per person!

The Plastic Packaging Duty (PPT) can come into power from 1 May 2022, using a duty to certain plastic packaging production and imports ( or packaging for which plastic is the main component)

That guide will discuss the facts of the duty, who it pertains to, and how you can prepare for it.

The plastic packaging duty is a flagship government system planned since 2018. This May, getting into power is critical of the central government’s environmental and sustainability planning.

As you can inform from the name, it will impose a duty on the manufacture or transfer of plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled content.

For packaging limiting combined components ( such as cardboard and plastic), if the weight of the plastic constituent is larger compared to other components, then your packaging comes within the range of the duty too.

The duty is priced at £200 per full tonne of finished packaging; corporations must register ahead of time, and a particular duty get back must be submitted. The business must inform you if the plastic packaging duty pertains to them.

You certainly can do this by including a statement about the duty within your invoices, showing this has been paid. Information on what constitutes finished plastic packaging components is found on HM Revenue & Practices website.

The duty will be used quarterly and paid by the maker or importer, perhaps not the customer, even though manufacturers and importers may, of course, improve their prices to cover the tax cost. Other fees remain chargeable on items such as VAT.

The new legislation is set to start on 1 May 2022.

The duty returns are quarterly; they cover four accounting intervals each year.

These are:

1 May to 30 June

1 September to 30 September

1 October to 31 December

1 January to 31 March.

It isn’t possible to choose your accounting periods.

Duty returns and funds must be published by the past functioning day of the month after the conclusion of each accounting period above. So, the first duty gets back, and payment for impacted corporations will be due by the conclusion of September 2022.

If you manufacture or transfer 10 or maybe more tonnes of plastic packaging within 12 months, you will need to join up for the tax.

Small corporations have a ceiling of 10 tonnes per year, so the duty won’t connect with you if you manufacture or transfer packaging below this weight across a 12-month rolling period.

What’s promising for smaller corporations is a ceiling of 10 tonnes a year. So, if you manufacture or transfer packaging below this weight (or manufacture it) across a 12-month rolling period, the duty won’t apply.

For example:

A business manufactures four tonnes of taxable plastic packaging each month. Subsequent 1 May they created four tonnes, yet another four tonnes in Might, following a further four tonnes in June.

They have now passed Delaware minimize ceiling because they have created 12 tonnes since 1 April. They have to register for the duty by 30 June because they are now liable for production or transfer from 1 July.

It is essential to determine which plastic is susceptible to Plastic Packaging Tax. You can find a guide on GOV.UK

The PPT will affect nearly all organizations in the following groups, amongst others:

Packaging production

Professional production

Consumer Things

Online retail

Food and Beverages

You will find three principal exemptions for plastic packaging components, which are:

Plastic packaging in the strong experience of a healing item, e.g., blister packs

Transfer packaging applied to protect secure transit of imported goods, e.g., pallet wrap

Plastic packaging is applied as a plane, train, or ship store.

You will find unique conditions about whether things will drop underneath the exemption, and these should be analyzed for every item where proper to see if they’ll apply.

Subscription is needed if:

at any time following 1 May 2022, a business needs to transfer or manufacture at least 10 tonnes of plastic packaging in the following 30 days. In that situation, enrollment is needed within 30 days of the very first day that problem is achieved; or

A business has created or imported at least 10 tonnes of plastic packaging in 12 months finishing on the last day of a scheduled month. In that situation, the company becomes liable for PPT from the very first day of another month and must register by the very first day of the following month. In the first year of the duty, a business only wants to join up when the amount of plastic packaging meets 10 tonnes in 12 months from 1 May 2022.

If either of those conditions is satisfied, enrollment is needed even though a business packaging is not chargeable, and it generally does not have to pay for any tax.

HMRC has printed advice on how best to register for PPT – even though this can not be performed until 1 May 2022.

To register, you will need to offer the following details:

Your business form

Your corporations handle and contact facts

The day your business became liable for plastic appearance duty

An estimate of how much-finished plastic packaging you expect to manufacture or transfer within the next 12 months

An individual reference number. This could be your Corporation Duty Unique Duty Reference (UTR), Self Assessment UTR (or National Insurance number), Company Reference number, or Charity Subscription number.
