Plastic Packaging Duty: How your business may prepare

The UK government is keen for corporations and people to use recycled materials wherever possible. Annually the UK provides significantly more than two million full tons of plastic packaging waste. That equates to about 36 kilograms of plastic packaging waste per person!

The Plastic Packaging Duty (PPT) can come into power from 1 May 2022, using a duty to certain plastic packaging production and imports ( or packaging for which plastic is the main component)

WHAT IS THE PLASTIC PACKAGING TAX?

WILL MY BUSINESS BE AFFECTED BY THE PLASTIC PACKAGING TAX?

If you manufacture or transfer 10 or maybe more tonnes of plastic packaging within 12 months, you will need to join up for the tax.

Small corporations have a ceiling of 10 tonnes per year, so the duty won’t connect with you if you manufacture or transfer packaging below this weight across a 12-month rolling period.

For example:

A business manufactures four tonnes of taxable plastic packaging each month. Subsequent 1 May they created four tonnes, yet another four tonnes in Might, following a further four tonnes in June.

EXEMPTIONS FOR PLASTIC PACKAGING

In the first year of the duty, a business only wants to join up when the amount of plastic packaging meets 10 tonnes in 12 months from 1 May 2022.

If either of those conditions is satisfied, enrollment is needed even though a business packaging is not chargeable, and it generally does not have to pay for any tax.

HMRC has printed advice on how best to register for PPT – even though this can not be performed until 1 May 2022.

To register, you will need to offer the following details:

Your business form

Your corporations handle and contact facts

The day your business became liable for plastic appearance duty

An estimate of how much-finished plastic packaging you expect to manufacture or transfer within the next 12 months

An individual reference number. This could be your Corporation Duty Unique Duty Reference (UTR), Self Assessment UTR (or National Insurance number), Company Reference number, or Charity Subscription number.
