New characters are set to join Otis and the gang at Moordale Secondary School.
It’s almost time to check back in with Otis, Eric, Maeve, and the rest of the Moordale Secondary gang from Netflix’s hit teenage comedy series Sex Education. The show has secured a third season, as confirmed in a video announcement from Headmaster Groff (Alistair Petrie) earlier this year.
Read on for all the news on Season 3’s casting, release date, plot details, and more.
Eight new episodes of Sex Education will arrive on Netflix on Friday, September 17. Ahead of the long-awaited release, the streamer teased the new season with a cheeky commercial for Moordale starring the cast. Watch the full preview here and check out the first photos below.
According to a synopsis from Netflix, our Moordale students are in for some new adventures.
Netflix has also released a full trailer (see above) that shows some big changes ahead for the gang. To combat Moordale’s new reputation as the sex school, head teacher Hope Haddon (Girls‘ Jemima Kirke) pulls a 180 on the sex-positive work Otis, Maeve, and Jean have put in for the last two seasons. Instead, the school gets a draconian sex-ed program, with a teacher seen yelling, “Sex will ruin your life.” We’re looking forward to seeing how Maeve and co. rebel against this new order.
In late September 2020, Netflix confirmed the arrival of three new cast members—Jason Isaacs, Jemima Kirke, and Dua Saleh—who will officially join the Sex Education family in the upcoming season.
Isaacs (who you might recognize as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films) will play Headmaster Groff’s older and “more successful” brother. Kirke (from HBO’s Girls) will portray Hope, Moordale’s new headmistress. And Saleh (a singer-songwriter from Minneapolis) will play Cal, a nonbinary student who disagrees with Hope. Indra Ové (Resident Evil) will join as Elsie’s foster mom, Anna.

All the above will join Sex Education‘s returning cast in the third season: Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, Aimee-Lou Wood, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Chaneil Kular, Simone Ashley, Mimi Keene, Tanya Reynolds, Mikael Persbrandt, Patricia Allison, Sami Outalbali, Anne-Marie Duff, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Alistair Petrie, Samantha Spiro, Rakhee Thakrar, and Jim Howick.
Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Netflix announced in September that production has started on the series’s third season.
Different cast members–including Gillan Anderson, Asa Butterfield, and Connor Swindells–appeared in separate video messages as they prepared to head back to set. Anderson briefly poked fun at still having “lockdown hair” while Butterfield geared up in a black face mask.

The streaming behemoth confirmed the news in a cheeky video featuring Alistair Petrie, who plays the chilling Headmaster Michael Groff.
Walking through the hallways of the makeshift Moordale Secondary, Petrie reflected on the different characters. Coming upon a portait of Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric Effiong, and Connor Swindells, who plays Adam Groff, Petrie said, “The pièce de résistance, Eric and Adam. I wonder what is in store for these two cherubs. Well, I suppose you’ll have to find out in season three, won’t you?”
