University of Pennsylvania names M. Elizabeth Magill as next president to succeed Amy Gutmann – Philadelphia Business Journal – Philadelphia Business Journal



The University of Pennsylvania selected M. Elizabeth Magill, executive vice president and provost at the University of Virginia, to serve as its ninth president. 
Prior to joining the University of Virginia in 2019, Magill was dean of the Stanford Law School, and was previously a faculty member at UVA’s School of Law for 15 years. 
Thursday’s announcement ends the long search process for President Amy Gutmann’s successor. Gutmann, 72, is Penn’s longest-serving president, having held the position since 2004. She was nominated last year by President Joe Biden to serve as U.S. ambassador to Germany, a position that could cut her tenure at Penn short if she is confirmed before her contract expires June 30.
Penn’s board of trustees will vote on Magill’s nomination during its meeting on March 4. If confirmed, Magill will start on July 1.
Magill, 56, will become the head of one of Greater Philadelphia’s biggest economic powerhouses. With roots dating back to 1740, Penn is the region’s largest employer, with a workforce of more than 46,000 between the Ivy League university and its health system. University researchers have spun out startups that have raised millions in investment capital while making medical breakthroughs, and neighboring Penn Medicine recently opened a $1.6 billion hospital in West Philadelphia. Magill will lead more than 23,000 full-time students at one of the country’s oldest and most competitive colleges.
She also faces the mounting challenges that university presidents across the country are grappling with: a declining student-age population, mental health of students and workers, student debt, Covid-19 and remote work and learning.
“The Penn presidency is one of the most complicated and demanding in higher education, and there are very few people anywhere in the world with the skills that this job demands,” Penn board of trustees Chairman Scott Bok said in a statement. “But through a thorough search process informed by input from all university constituencies, we found exactly the right person.”
Magill attended Yale University and received her law degree from the UVA School of Law. The Fargo, North Dakota, native clerked for late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III, and was a senior legislative assistant for energy and natural resources for former U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad.
She was also a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, a fellow in the Law and Public Affairs Program at Princeton University and a visiting professor at Downing College at Cambridge University.
Magill arrives on the heels of one of Penn’s most successful and ambitious fundraisers. Gutmann recently wrapped up a $5.4 billion capital campaign, which blew past the university’s initial $4.1 billion goal. Gutmann also spearheaded a $4.3 billion campaign that ended in 2013. Magill led Stanford Law when it received its largest-ever alumni gift: a $25 million donation from William A. Franke to endow its global law program. 
“What is special about Penn is that it does this with an uncommon mix of pragmatism, creativity, and humanity,” Magill said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the faculty, students, staff, alumni, and community members to build on this inspiring legacy and shape Penn’s next great chapter. I cannot wait to get started.”
