Blake Campbell has just finished his third year in the classroom at Warren High School, where the agriscience program consists of approximately 80 students in 9th-12th grade. His main focus, no matter what content area he is teaching, is to help students invest in their futures. Warren High School is located in a rural community, where students often fall below the poverty line and have limited resources to work towards improving themselves academically, socially, and professionally. Despite the financial obstacles that face them, the Warren High School Agriscience program is equipped with many advanced technologies to enhance student learning, such as a 3-D printer, laser engraver, and plasma cutter.
Upon completion of his first year of teaching, Campbell was asked to design an agricultural education space for a new local high school.
Campbell currently teaches five different agriscience classes at Warren High School. Each course is based on state standards, as well as industry and community needs. Campbell focuses on inquiry-based instruction and hands-on labs with his students. Some highlights of his teaching and curriculum are; overseeing his students raising and butchering broiler chickens, managing a land lab with 15 different varieties of trees, conducting food science labs based on real-life dietary needs, and conducting agricultural advocacy activities for elementary school students.
In addition to his formal classroom and laboratory instruction, Campbell works with students to develop their own supervised agricultural experiences (SAE’s) which help them develop applicable career and life skills. One hundred percent of his students have their own supervised agricultural experience and together they have logged over 8,000 hours on the Agricultural Experience Tracker website. In 2020, his students invested over $221,000 back into their community, according to their economic impact records.
Within Campbell’s three years of teaching agricultural education, he has helped students succeed in many award areas including; 20 Ohio FFA State Degrees, four National FFA American Degrees, eight Proficiency Award applications, one State-Winning Proficiency award, and one Star in Agribusiness application.
Through strong partnerships with industry specialists, community stakeholders, chapter alumni members, advisory committee members, and community professionals, students are exposed to many different career paths. Campbell makes it a priority for his students to learn from these people and invites their input on classroom curriculum. Guests have led students through hands-on educational experiences like the butchering process of squirrels, cooking gluten-free meals, and learning advanced operations on the plasma cutter. Partnerships like this help to strengthen the future of the agriculture industry, which reinforces Campbell as an outstanding recipient of the NAAE Teachers Turn the Key scholarship award.
The Teachers Turn the Key scholarship brings together agricultural educators with two to four years of classroom experience and immerses them in three days of professional development, focusing specifically on early career goals and needs. Participants also have the opportunity to become involved in NAAE leadership and network with other NAAE convention attendees. TTTK awardees come away from the experience with a long-lasting peer cohort and tools that will help them have successful careers as agricultural educators. RAM Trucks sponsors the TTTK program, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
