Thanks to the highly contagious omicron variant, COVID-19 is again spreading rapidly in Ohio, including its schools. But should that mean a return to remote learning for some? ATLANTA — On Jan. 4, 2021, Chicago Public Schools reported 450 new COVID-19 cases among students and 276 new cases among adults. The new cases were record highs for the academic year. That night, the teachers union voted to start teaching virtually because of the unsafe school environments. In response to the vote, the school district canceled classes. Their reason was simple: Children need to learn in classrooms.
Despite negotiations, classes were canceled for the remainder of the week. The impasse lasted through the weekend, with classes canceled on Monday. Late Monday evening, the sides came to a deal which will call for in-person classes to resume today, Wednesday, Jan. 12.
