5 Possible Complications of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third and last molars that come out when a person is between 17 to 25 years old. By the time these teeth come out, the remaining teeth are already fully established and there is little or no room left, causing the wisdom teeth to come out misaligned, embedded in the jaw bone, and in some cases, partially erupted in the gum. This type of teeth mostly does not fit in the mouth and causes a series of oral health problems which can only be solved by removing them.

Even though the procedure is mostly common and usually goes well, complications have been known to occur. In fact, studies have revealed that up to 30% of people experience complications after wisdom tooth removal.

Therefore, here are five of the most common complications that can arise from wisdom teeth removal.

Dry socket

Medically known as Alveolar Osteitis, Dry socket is a condition that occurs after a tooth is removed. 

In a typical tooth extraction, a blood clot forms over the site of the extraction (as part of the healing process), but when this blood clot is dislodged, it results in dry socket. 

According to one study, this condition occurs in about 4% of patients usually between the ages of 11 and 80 and is especially common among smokers and more likely to occur in their lower jaw. Another study revealed that dry socket typically happens between three to five days following tooth extraction.

Some of the signs of dry socket include:

  • Throbbing pain in the excavated site
  • Unpleasant smell or taste around the affected area

Once this condition is discovered, it will be properly cleaned by your dentist, who will then cover the affected area with medicated dressing that will be changed regularly until your mouth heals. 

Problem with jaw opening

Another complication associated with tooth extraction is the difficulty in opening the mouth properly. Also known as Trismus, this condition is usually associated with patients between the ages of 17 and 25, particularly those with impacted wisdom teeth. This is one of the reasons you should visit a qualified oral surgeon when considering wisdom teeth removal.

Pain and swelling

Pain and swelling are expected after any tooth extraction procedure. While this usually differs by patient, men report less pain than women. Though post surgery pain and discomfort is normal, studies show that most people experience more than normal pain and swelling, with about 15% of patients experiencing severe pain more than a week after the extraction.

In this type of situation, your dentist will advise you on over-the-counter pain relief medications you can take and instruct you to avoid putting pressure on your unhealed mouth. 

Excessive bleeding

Tooth extraction is not meant to cause excessive bleeding but studies have shown that more than 30% of patients experience excessive bleeding on the first day after their wisdom tooth was extracted. While the amount of bleeding depends on the type or position of tooth that was extracted, your dentist will advise you to avoid smoking and strenuous activities until your mouth is completely healed.
