Refugees who attempted to make it to Australia via boat have endured long periods on remote islands or being held in immigration detention facilities, causing harm to their mental well-being.

New Zealand has announced it will accept asylum seekers and refugees of 450 in Australia or at its offshore detention center in Nauru as part of Australia’s strict immigration policy nine years after the first proposal was rejected.

“New Zealand has an extensive and proud tradition of resettlement of refugees, and this agreement is yet another illustration of how we’re fulfilling our international humanitarian obligation,” said New Zealand’s Minister for Immigration, Kris Faafoi. “We are delighted that we can provide refugee resettlement solutions for those who might otherwise have to live in uncertainty about their futures.”
